Evolution of Signalling
At UK, Railway line for Goods Traffic was opened between Darlingtonto Stockton in the year 1825. In 1830, first passenger train ran between Liverpool to Manchester.Policeman were posted at fixed interval to Signal the Train.
Signaling Systems have gradually replaced the human being.Signaling to a great extent eliminates accidents caused by human failure.Signaling and telecommunication also provides techno economical solutions for throughput enhancement.Signaling as a subject is not taught in any of the Engineering college as these technologies are specificto Indian Railways. In order to impart training on RailwaySignaling to the new recruits (both Non Gaz & Gaz Officers) and also serving ones, “Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunication” (IRISET) was established on 24-11-1957in Secunderabad. Located on Mettuguda- Tarnaka Road. This is the only Institute in Afro-Asian country whichimparts training on Railway Signaling having both theoretical and practical hands-on training.Keeping abreast with technological upgradation, more sophisticatedequipments are being added in the labs. At present, IRISET has 11 laboratories, 12 well-equipped classrooms, 4 well furnished hostels. Since inception, the institute has trained more than 60,000 supervisors & officers in the last 54 years and enabled them to handle Railway’s needs of expansion & modernization. The need for training has considerably increased over years due to growth in Rail Traffic necessitating need for Technological up- gradation of Signaling & Telecom systems IRISET has met this challenging need by organizing 100 courses in 2010 against 80in 2009, imparting training to more than3000 personnel against 2123 in 2009.In the current year 108 courses have been planned.Engineers alsohave been trainedfrom Public Sector, Private Firms and Foreign nationals ofAfro-Asian region.IRISET also took initiative by developing E-learning modules on various Technical topics for interactive learning on “Anywhere Anytime” basis. which has been uploaded on the website. The Institute has also completed the task of extending its classroom virtually to all ZonalS&T Training Centers via VIDEO Conferencing. The training imparted at the Institute emphasizes on all round development of personality.Meditation, Yoga, Indoor & Outdoor sports facilities are provided in the campus (including golf course).
